The son of W. E. Fairclough of Toronto, Arthur Bradfield Fairclough was a Lieutenant in the 166th Battalion before he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in May 1917. After training he was posted to 19 Squadron and scored 9 victories flying SPADs in December 1917. When the squadron converted to Sopwith Dolphins in 1918, Fairclough scored 5 more victories prior to joining 23 Squadron as a flight commander. Before he returned to England in the summer of 1918, he scored 5 more victories in June and July.

      For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During four months he has destroyed four enemy machines, and has driven down two others completely out of control. When engaged with hostile aircraft he has at all times displayed the utmost dash and courage.
