Arthur Newland, the son of
Frederick Thomas and Sarah Newland, scored 22 victories as an observer
with 20 Squadron in 1918. For his actions that year, he was one of only two airmen to
receive the Distinguished Flying Medal
twice during the war. Arthur's father was a machine hand (1901 census)
and viewer (1911 census) at the Royal Small Arms factory, Enfield Lock,
Middlesex. His siblings were William, Edith and Ivy. Arthur married Olive Keene
on 15 June 1929 when his profession was a postman. He was awarded the Imperial Service Medal in 1959 on retirement from the G.P.O. (London Gazette)
and died in 1973 at Enfield. |
