Arthur Newland, the son of Frederick Thomas and Sarah Newland, scored 22 victories as an observer with 20 Squadron in 1918. For his actions that year, he was one of only two airmen to receive the Distinguished Flying Medal twice during the war. Arthur's father was a machine hand (1901 census) and viewer (1911 census) at the Royal Small Arms factory, Enfield Lock, Middlesex. His siblings were William, Edith and Ivy. Arthur married Olive Keene on 15 June 1929 when his profession was a postman.  He was awarded the Imperial Service Medal in 1959 on retirement from the G.P.O. (London Gazette) and died in 1973 at Enfield.

   He is an excellent shot, and has done remarkably well as an observer, gaining the confidence of the pilots with whom he has served. He has personally assisted in shooting down five enemy aeroplanes.

   This non-commissioned officer sets a splendid example of courage, skill and determination to the other non-commissioned officers of his squadron. During the month of August he crashed six enemy machines.
