The son of William John (an accountant) and Mary Ann Hemming, Geoffrey William Hemming received a commission in the Royal Naval Air Service on 5 July 1916. Posted to 4 Naval Squadron, he scored 6 victories flying Sopwith fighters in 1917. In November 1920 he was posted to No. 4 Squadron at Farnborough, where he remained until 1922 before joining the Irish Flight at Collinstown. When this unit was disbanded, he was posted to No. 2 Squadron, Manston and from there went to the Marine Experimental Establishment at Felixstowe in August 1922. In 1925, Flying Officer Hemming was promoted to the rank of Flight Lieutenant and posted to RAF Calshot. A year later, he was killed in a crash at Calshot on 26 February 1926.

Flt. Sub-Lieut. Geoffrey William Hemming, R.N.A.S.
   In recognition of his services with a Wing of the R.N.A.S. at Dunkirk between March and September, 1917, during which period he has been continuously employed on the Belgian coast, and on many occasions has been in charge of a flight. On the 22nd September, 1917, he led his flight against a formation of twenty enemy aircraft, and engaging three consecutively, brought them all down.
