The son of Dr. George Keith and Gertrude Mary (Ellis) Gifford, Rupert Cyril D´Arcy Gifford was at Epsom College in 1911. At age 18, standing 5 feet 9 inches tall, he enlisted in London on 26 March 1917. From Co. A Inns of Court O.T.C., he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps on 2 August 1917. With 208 Squadron in 1918, he scored six victories in France flying the Sopwith Camel. Post-war, Gifford was transferred to the unemployed list on 8 October 1919 and later became a physician.
