The son of Alfred Dolan, Henry Eric Dolan attended Saint Gregory's Catholic College, near Bath. When the war began, Dolan was in Canada and he enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 22 September 1914. He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and was posted to 74 Squadron in 1918.
