After serving with the Lowland Brigade Field Artillery and receiving a commission in the Black Watch, Robert James Cullen transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in January 1917. Posted to 88 Squadron, he scored 5 victories with the Bristol Fighter before he was wounded in action on 29 June 1918.
