Before it entered combat in June 1918, the 27th Aero began its existence as "K" Company at Kelly Field in 1917. On 15 June 1917, it was redesignated the 21st Provisional Aero Squadron before becoming the 27th Aero Squadron on 23 July 1917. After additional training in England, the squadron arrived in France in the spring of 1918 and became a part of the 1st Pursuit Group on 1 June 1918. The following day, the squadron lost its first pilot and scored its first victory when it entered combat on the Western Front.
