The Air Force Medal (AFM) was awarded to non-commissioned officers for an act or acts of valour, courage or devotion to duty whilst flying, though not in active operations against the enemy. The medal was also granted to individuals who were not in the Air Force but rendered distinguished service in aviation in actual flying.
For services during the Great War, the London Gazette announced the award of the Air Force Medal (AFM) to members of the flying services 127 times:
