"A great deal of an aeroplane could be holed without affecting its ability to fly. Wings and fuselage could be—and often were—pierced in 50 places, missing the occupants by inches (blissfully unaware of how close it had come until they returned to base). Then the sailmaker would carefully cover each hole with a square inch of Irish linen frayed at the edges and with a brushful of dope make our aircraft 'serviceable' again within an hour." —Married with two children, Ritter von Adam served in the infantry until he was badly wounded on 2 September 1914. Recovering from his wounds, he transferred to the Fliegertruppe and often flew as an observer for Eduard von Schleich while assigned to FA(A) 2b. Flying the Albatros D.III, he scored his first three victories with Jasta 34. In the summer of 1917, he joined Jasta 6, becoming Staffelführer on 30 August 1917. He was killed in action near Langemarck when his Albatros D.V was shot down, possibly by Kenneth Montgomery. His Knight's Cross with Swords of the Order of the House of Hohenzollern was awarded posthumously.
