A Sopwith Camel pilot, Robert Johnstone Owen was commissioned in August 1917 and scored 7 victories while serving with 43 Squadron. On the morning of 28 March 1918, he was flying in John Trollope's nine man patrol when it was attacked by a flight of Albatros D.Vs. Owen, Trollope and three other Camel pilots were shot down during the fight. Captured by the Germans, Owen escaped twice but was recaptured. On his third attempt, he succeeded in escaping from his captors aboard a ship sailing from Danzig and returned to his home in Newcastle. During World War II, Owen served with the Royal Air Force as a medical officer.
