Robert Miles Todd of Madisonville, Ohio attended the University of Cincinnati and Ohio State University. Before he joined the Signal Enlisted Reserve Corps on 6 August 1917, he raised almost $200,000 as a Liberty Bond saleman. After training in Texas and Canada, he served with the 17th Aero Squadron in France. In a melee with members of Jagdgeschwader 3, Todd and six other Sopwith Camel pilots were shot down on 26 August 1918. Todd survived but was captured and spent four months in a German prisoner of war camp. During World War II he returned to active duty and served in England but did not fly. In 1981 he was one of 30 aces honored by France for their contribution to the war effort during the Great War. |
