Hemer served with FA(A) 283 before he was posted to Jasta 6 on 10 September 1917. After scoring 18 victories, he was wounded in action on 9 August 1918 when his Fokker DR.I was shot down during a dogfight with British D.H.9s and Sopwith Camels.
"The triplane was my favourite fighting machine because it had such wonderful flying qualities. I could let myself stunt — looping and rolling — and could avoid an enemy by diving with perfect safety.
