Joining the German Air Force in 1915, Fieseler crashed during training and was in hospital until February 1916. As a two-seater pilot, he joined FA(A) 243 in October 1916 and was later assigned to FA 41. In May 1917, after training on single-seaters, he was posted to Jasta 25 on the Macedonian front. Here he scored 19 victories flying various aircraft, including the Roland D.II. Post-war, Fieseler founded FieselerFlugzeugbau and was well known for his aircraft designs and skills as an aerobatic pilot. In 1934, flying a biplane built by his own company, he won the first World Aerobatic Championship in France. The following year, Fieseler began manufacturing trainers and fighters under license for the Luftwaffe. He also developed the Fi 156 reconnaissance plane, better known as " The Storch." In 1939, Fieseler's company changed its name to Gerhard Fieseler Werke and continued producing aircraft throughout World War II.
