An officer cadet, Bormann joined a reserve infantry regiment in 1915. Transferring to the German Air Force in 1917, he was assigned to Jasta 2 in May 1918. Flying the Fokker D.VII, he was credited with sixteen victories, eight of them being Sopwith Camels. After the war, Bormann worked as a flying instructor before joining the Luftwaffe in 1934. During World War II, he attained the rank of Major General. Captured by the Russians in 1945, he was incarcerated for ten years.
