After serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers, Rayner transferred to the Royal Flying Corps where he flew as an observer with 52 Squadron before receiving pilot training. Lieutenant Rayner received Royal Aero Club Aviator's Certificate 5535 on 10 September 1917. He joined 60 Squadron flying the S.E.5a in August 1918 and went on to become commander of 'A' flight. Wing Commander Rayner retired from the Royal Air Force after World War II.
