The son of Alexandra Laura Paynter (born at Portsmouth), John De Camborne Paynter was injured in a crash on 9 April 1917. He was wounded in action twice during 1918 and died from wounds received when the Germans bombed his aerodrome.

Birth registered in 2nd quarter of 1898 at Portsea Island, Hampshire; 1901 residence was Bognor, Sussex; older brother of Richard H. De Camborne Paynter.

Listed as John de Campbourne Paynter in the London Gazette.

Flt. Lieut. John de Campbourne Paynter, R.N.A.S.
   For the good work performed by him during a bombing attack on Ostende Seaplane Base on the 3rd March, 1918, carried out in spite of very adverse weather conditions. He has shown great zeal and courage as a fighting pilot, having destroyed several enemy, machines, and been twice wounded in aerial combats.
