The son of Walter and Elizabeth Oliver, Thomas Alfred Oliver's birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1893 at Loughborough. He enlisted in the King's Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster) at Loughborough on 1 January 1908. On 17 October 1915, 2nd Lieutenant Oliver received Royal Aero Club Aviator's Certificate 1921 on a Maurice Farman biplane at Military School, Shoreham. He scored five victories before he was killed in action.
