The son of Thomas William and Lizzie Rebecca (Pooley) Doran, Thomas Arthur Doran, a junior correspondent clerk, enlisted 21 October 1915 and served with the 5th T. F. Battalion of the Manchester Regiment before being seconded to the Royal Flying Corps as a temporary 2nd Lieutenant on 20 March 1917. Posted to 23 Squadron, he scored seven victories flying SPADs in France. Promoted to Lieutenant on 4 December 1917.
