The son of Horace Bentley and Rosa Evelyn (Wanklyn) Debenham, Corporal Horace Gilbert Wanklyn Debenham, from Winchester College O.T.C., reported for duty with the Royal Flying Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant on 3 June 1916. With 46 Squadron, he flew Nieuport two-seaters as an observer. After pilot training, he returned to 46 Squadron on 22 November 1917 and scored 5 victories flying Sopwith Camels with 'B' flight in 1918. Posted to 208 Squadron as a flight commander on 10 May 1918, Debenham scored his final victory in May 1918.
