After serving with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, Kelly joined the Royal Flying Corps on 6 July 1917. The following year, he was posted to 1 Squadron as an S.E.5a pilot. Shot down by a Fokker DR.I, he scored six victories before he was killed in action.
