Assigned to 29 Squadron in January 1918, Ernest Charles Hoy, the son of Charles and Eliza Hoy, flew the S.E.5a. He was hospitalized in May 1918 but returned to duty in August. On three occasions, he scored double victories on the same day. On the afternoon of 28 September 1918, Hoy was shot down south of Menin by a Fokker D.VII flown by Josef Raesch of Jasta 43. He was captured and held prisoner until the end of the war. In an historic flight on 7 August 1919, Hoy made the first airmail flight over the Canadian Rockies. Flying the Curtiss JN-4, the historic flight from Vancouver to Calgary lasted 16 hours and 42 minutes.
