The son of William and Alice (Usher) Mustard,
Ernest Andrew Mustard served with the 1st Signals Toop in Egypt and the 29th Australian Battalion at Gallipol before he transferred to the Australian Flying Corps in 1917. He scored 5 victories in Palestine as a Bristol Fighter observer with pilot Ross Smith. Postwar, he changed his surname to Mustar and flew with the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II. Mustard was responsible for the first aerial survey of the Great Barrier Reef.

During the recent operations this officer has shown exceptional ability as a bomber, obtaining numerous direct hits on railway lines, stations, etc.; extensive damage was caused, and the enemy lines of communication were seriously interfered with. In an aerial combat he forced an enemy aeroplane to land, and destroyed it with machine-gun fire.
