Herbert Joseph Larkin served with the Royal Engineers in Egypt and the Australian Light Horse Brigade at Gallipoli. On 18 September 1915, he was wounded in the chest by a sniper's bullet. When he recovered, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and served as an instructor with 65 Squadron in 1917. After serving with 5 Squadron as an R.E.8 reconnaissance pilot, he was posted to 87 Squadron in 1918. As a flight commander, he scored 11 victories while flying the Sopwith Dolphin. During World War II, Larkin served with the Royal Air Force. Following a court martial in 1942, he was discharged from the service for revealing sensitive information to the news media.

Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) |
Capt. Herbert Joseph Larkin.
In the recent fighting this officer has led twelve offensive patrols, and these patrols have destroyed twenty-one enemy machines and driven down four out of control. The success of his squadron is due not only to his most able leadership, but also to the fine fighting spirit he inspires by his personal courage and disregard of danger.
