Having been educated at Rushworth state school and Rushworth P-12 college, George Jones enlisted in June 1915 and served with the 9th Australian Light Horse at Gallipoli and in Palestine before he transferred to the Australian Flying Corps. In early 1918, he was posted to 4 Squadron in France. A Sopwith Camel pilot, he scored his first victory over an Albatros D.V near Habourdin on the morning of 21 February 1918 but was wounded by ground fire while bombing enemy troop positions on 24 March 1918. When he recovered, Jones returned to combat and scored three more victories before his squadron was re-equipped with the Sopwith Snipe. With this aircraft, he downed three Fokker D.VIIs by the end of the war. A career officer, Jones remained in the Royal Australian Air Force and later became an Air Marshal, receiving a CB and KBE. Before his death in 1992, he was the last living Australian ace of World War I.
