With the combined strength of about fifty aircraft from four Jastas, JG I was the first fighter wing in the German Air Force (Luftstreitkräfte). To most German airmen it was known as Geschwader Richthofen. To many of its opponents it was called "Richthofen's Flying Circus." In either case, the name honored JG I's first commander, Manfred von Richthofen who was killed in action on 21 April 1918. With his death, JG I was renamed Jagdgeschwader Freiherr von Richthofen I by order of the Kaiser. |
