20 Squadron was formed at Netheravon in September 1915 and was posted to France on 23 January 1916.

Sergeant Thomas Mottershead, an F.E.2d pilot with 20 Squadron, was the only non-commissioned officer pilot awarded the Victoria Cross during the Great War.
