The oldest fixed wing flying squadron in the world, 2 Squadron was the first Royal Flying Corps squadron to cross the channel to France. This unit produced the first airmen to win the Victoria Cross. 2nd Lt Rhodes-Moorhouse was awarded the VC for his actions in a raid on Courtrai and Lt AA MacLeod who, after downing three Fokker Triplanes, managed to fly a badly damaged and burning aircraft whilst standing on the wing until it crashed between the lines whereupon he pulled his injured observer from the wreckage. |
