Formed as an Airship Company in May 1912, 1 Squadron was briefly under Naval control before joining the Royal Flying Corps in May 1914. The unit was posted to France with a variety of aircraft in March 1915. In February 1917, it became a fighter squadron when it was re-equipped with the Nieuport 17.
