Considered by many to be world's first air force, the French Air Service (Aéronautique Militaire) was established on 22 October 1910 under the command of General Roques.
France led the world in the design of early aircraft and by 1914 the French Air Service fielded 132 machines divided amongst 21 units (escadrilles). Primarily used for reconnaissance duties along the front, the Aéronautique Militaire rapidly increased in size and strength and by 1916 French aircraft manufacturers were supplying it with nearly 500 machines a month. By November 1918, the French Air Service consisted of 127,630 men and 3,222 aircraft.
During the Great War, the airmen of the French Air Service claimed 2,049 enemy aircraft in air combat and destroyed 357 kite balloons for some 3,500 killed in action, 3,000 wounded/missing and 2,000 killed in accidents.
