In the spring of 1911, the Belgian Air Service (Aviation Militaire Belge) was comprised of five pilots, two mechanics, a carpenter and no planes. By the time Germany declared war on Belgium in August 1914, the Aviation Militaire Belge had increased its strength to four squadrons of Henri Farman aeroplanes but only two of these squadrons were fully operational.
