Derived from the R.E.5 and specifically designed to carry a new 335 lb (152.4 kg) bomb, the underpowered R.E.7 was a disappointment. By March 1916, Trenchard declared the R.E.7 "useless," and it was relegated to a reconnaissance role and towing targets for aerial gunnery practice. The R.E.7 was withdrawn from service and replaced by the B.E.12 in the summer of 1916.
