Designed by Ernst Heinkel, the Hansa-Brandenburg D.I biplane fighter suffered a series of fatal accidents when it first entered service. Nicknamed the "Starstrutter" or "Spider," it employed a unique V strut system. Despite a non-synchronized machine gun and an obstructed forward view, the D.I was widely used by Austro-Hungarian aces like Godwin Brumowski.
