The son of Griffith Owens, William Arthur Owens was an undergraduate student at Bangor University, from 5 October 1915 to 12 January 1917. He reported to Worcester on 18 January 1918; to Reading on 11 February 1918; to the School of Aerial Gunnery on 11 March 1918. He received a promotion to 2nd Lieutenant (on probation) on 5 March 1918 (effective 12 February 1918). Owens served as an observer with 211 Squadron from 18 April to 11 June 1918. With 49 Squadron on 12 June 1918, he claimed five victories between 25 July and 4 November 1918. He was posted to Home Establishment on 14 March 1919 and transferred to the unemployed list on 16 April 1919; AIR 76/384.
