A native of Cleveland, Ohio and the son of Henry J. and Mary A. Luff, Frederic Earnest Luff attended Case Western Reserve University (class of 1918) and was called to active duty on 15 August 1917. A Private first class with the Signal Enlisted Reserve Corps, Luff accepted a commission as 1st Lieutenant, Aviation Section, Signal Officers Reserve Corps, on 19 January 1918. To gain experience in aerial combat, he was attached to the Royal Air Force. Posted to 74 Squadron in July 1918, he downed three Fokker D.VIIs and two balloons as an S.E.5a pilot. On 19 September 1918, he was reassigned to the 25th Aero Squadron but the war was over before he had an opportunity to increase his score. He was honorably discharged on 19 Feburary 1919. In May 1919, Luff was badly injured in a crash near Lorain, Ohio and never flew again. He died at his parents' home in Cleveland, Ohio following a five year battle with ill health.
