Scoring 5 victories in a single engagement on 30 July 1918, William Watson Smith together with his pilot, Walter Carl Simon, encountered 16 enemy aircraft whilst on offensive patrol. In the fight that followed, both men were wounded and their B.F.2b was badly shot-up.
