Heir to the Glenlivet Distillery and son of Colonel and Mrs. G. Smith Grant, of Minmore, Glenlivet, Banffshire, Smith-Grant served with the kilted 9th Royal Scots in the trenches of France before joining the Royal Flying Corps in August 1916. Posted to 70 Squadron in 1917, he claimed 2 victories and became a Flight Commander before being reassigned to 28 Squadron in Italy toward the end of the year. After downing three more enemy aircraft, he rejoined 70 Squadron in France and scored his final victory on 23 May 1918. Six days later, Smith-Grant was wounded in action and taken to a Canadian field hospital where he was killed by a bomb blast during an air raid by German aircraft. |
