The son of Alexander and Elizabeth Smart, Wallace Alexander Smart served with the Royal Engineers before he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. Cadet Smart was promoted to temp. 2nd Lieutenant (on probation) on 26 September 1917. He was confirmed in rank on 9 January 1918. Posted to 1 Squadron in France on 10 April 1918, he scored 5 victories flying the S.E.5a. Lt. Smart was transferred to the unemployed list on 11 January 1919.
