The son of William and Elizabeth Rae, Lieutenant Thomas Gillies Rae received Royal Aero Club Aviator's Certificate 5486 on a Graham-White biplane at Graham-White School, Hendon on 8 December 1917. Posted to 48 Squadron in the fall of 1918, Rae was credited with downing six Fokker D.VIIs as a Bristol F.2b pilot.
