Thomas Laurence Purdom received Royal Aero Club Aviator's Certificate 1873 on a Maurice Farman biplane at Military School, Birmingham on 11 October 1915. From the King's Own Scottish Borderers, Territorial Force, 2nd Lieutenant (temporary Lieutenant) Purdom was appointed Flying Officer on 18 January 1916. On 20 September 1916, he was appointed Flight Commander with the rank of temporary Captain. A Bristol Fighter pilot with 62 Squadron in 1918, Purdom and his observers scored thirteen victories.

Lt. (T./Capt.) Thomas Laurence Purdom, K.O.S.B., and R.F.C.
   For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He attacked and shot down a hostile scout, and when himself attacked by a second scout, he shot the latter down out of control also. He has in addition to these destroyed four enemy machines within a month. He has shown the most exceptional gallantry and daring in engaging enemy aircraft.
