The son of Finlay and Agnes J. Mcquistan of Greenock, Renfrewshire, Finlay McQuistan served with the Royal Field Artillery before he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. In June 1916, he was assigned to 12 Squadron to fly two-seaters but was wounded in action the following September. Reassigned to 55 Squadron in March 1917, he was wounded again in May while scoring his first victory. By the following year, he was flying Sopwith Dolphins with 19 Squadron, claiming nine more victories before the Armistice was signed.

(FRANCE)
By his example of determination and courage Capt. McQuistan has inspired the greatest confidence in the other pilots of his squadron. He has led over 30 squadron offensive patrols, and the success attained by his squadron during the past three months is largely due to his skilful leadership. This officer has destroyed or driven down out of control nine enemy machines.
