The son of Walter and Jeannie Carlaw of Glasgow, Walter Macfarlane Carlaw joined the Royal Flying Corps in May 1917. Posted to 70 Squadron in January 1918, he scored twelve victories flying Sopwith Camels in France. Transferred to the unemployed list, he left the Royal Air Force in January 1919 and returned to Glasgow to pursue a successful career as a mechanical engineer. He returned to uniform with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve during World War II. |
