The son of David and Barbara Binnie, James Alexander Weatherhead Binnie transferred to the Royal Flying Corps after serving with the Highland Light Infantry. 2nd Lieutenant Binnie received Royal Aero Club Aviator's Certificate 4234 on the Caudron biplane at Cheltenham Flying School on 16 February 1917. Posted to 48 Squadron, he scored 9 victories flying the Bristol Fighter in the summer of 1917.
