Commissioned in August 1917, Neil Ritz Smuts was posted to 3 Squadron on 1 January 1918. Flying Sopwith Camels, he scored five victories and participated in numerous ground attack sorties.

      During recent operations this officer has displayed marked courage and initiative in attacking ground targets from low altitudes, inflicting heavy damage on the enemy. On 28th September he demolished at least four gun teams and limbers, causing very heavy casualties among the personnel and horses.
