Hector Cyril Daniel joined the Royal Flying Corps on 11 April 1917. He was promoted to temporary 2/Lt. on 2 August 1917; 2/Lt. and Flying Officer on 30 September 1917. He was posted to 43 Squadron on 26 November 1917 and scored 9 victories flying the Sopwith Camel. He joined 70 Squadron on 15 June 1918, was assigned to 3 Fighting School on 9 July 1918 and was transferred to the Unemployed List on 10 August 1919. Returning to South Africa in 1921, he joined the South African Air Force in 1923 and, by 1939, was a Lieutenant Colonel serving as Director of Air and Technical Services. Having attained the rank of Brigadier, Daniel committed suicide in a Pretoria hospital shortly after the end of World War II.

   For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in numerous aerial encounters. On one occasion he completely destroyed three enemy aeroplanes on the same day. He has in addition crashed three others and sent down two out of control. He has always displayed the greatest skill, keenness and courage in aerial fighting, and his services have been of inestimable value to his patrol leader.
