After two years of service with the army in Africa, Horace Dale Barton joined the Royal Flying Corps. Following flight training, he served briefly with 84 Squadron before he was reassigned to 24 Squadron on 3 January 1918. Evidence suggests he may have been the ace who shot down the Hans Wolff on 16 May 1918. An S.E.5a pilot, Barton shared in the capture of Kurt Wüsthoff on 17 June 1918 when the German's Fokker D.VII was forced down near Cachy. |

Lieut. (A./Capt.) Horace Dale Barton,
D.F.C. (FRANCE)
An excellent patrol leader, combining in a marked degree coolness and courage. Since 30th July he has destroyed three enemy machines and driven down three out of control. He has also rendered most valuable service in attacking enemy troops on the ground, silencing, on August 30th, a hostile battery and causing the horses to stampede.
