The eldest son of Edward and Margaret Kelly, temporary Lieutenant Edward T. Caulfield Kelly, of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, transferred to the General List on 21 May 1917, with seniority from 7 April 1917. A Sopwith 1½ Strutter observer with 45 Squadron, he and his pilots scored five victories in May 1917. He was wounded on 28 May 1917 and returned to England
