An experienced pilot when the war began, Franz Josef Walz joined the infantry on 15 July 1905 but transferred to the German Air Force in 1912. The "Eagle of Jericho" flew more than 500 sorties on the Western Front and in Palestine during the war. In 1916 he shot down 6 two-seaters before he was wounded in combat on 30 July. On 14 May 1917, he scored his only victory of the year when he shot down an outdated D.H.2 piloted by English ace William Curphey. Despite a low score, he was awarded the Blue Max for his leadership skills in August 1918. The following month, he was forced down and captured by the British. During World War II, he joined the Luftwaffe and attained the rank of Generalleutnant. In 1945, he was captured by the Russians and died in a prison camp. |
