As an observer, Schilling scored 8 victories flying with Albert Dossenbach. Shot down on 3 November 1916, Dossenbach was wounded whilst Schilling was burnt. Assigned to fly with another pilot, Schilling was killed in action when his Halberstadt was shot down near Flesquieres by Charles Nungesser on 4 December 1916.
