As a two-seater pilot with BAO in 1914-15, one of Osterroht's observers was Manfred von Richthofen. Osterroht assumed command of Jasta 12 on 12 October 1916. Scoring his final victory at noon on 23 April 1917, Osterroht was killed in action six hours later when he was shot down by the Sopwith Pups of 3 Naval Squadron.
