Neuenhofen joined the the German Air Force on 1 July 1915. On 1 July 1917, he joined FA(A) 215 on the Russian Front, serving with this unit until he was reassigned to Jasta 27 at the end of the year. Flying the Fokker D.VII, he downed 15 enemy aircraft including a Sopwith Camel flown by American ace George Vaughn.
